JOB SUMMARY

• As a member of the Enterprise Technical Services team, a Senior Enterprise Linux Systems Engineer will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and managing our Linux-based infrastructure, with a focus on automation and efficiency using Infrastructure as Code tools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES System Administration:

• Oversee the installation, configuration, and maintenance of 500+ Ubuntu Linux servers and systems

• Manage user accounts, permissions, and access rights

• Monitor and analyze performance metrics, identify issues, and implement solutions to improve performance and prevent downtime

• Ensure timely and effective delivery of upgrades and new configurations. • Participate in on-call rotation and after-hours support as required

• Responsible for managing and maintaining HAProxy entries.

• Responsible managing and maintaining BINDDNS entries.

Infrastructure Management:

• Design, implement, and maintain scalable and highly available Linux-based infrastructure

• Collaborate with other teams to integrate Linux systems with other IT infrastructure components

• Plan and execute system upgrades and migrations

• Evaluate new technologies and products related to infrastructure architecture and make recommendations for adoption or improvement

Security and Compliance:

• Implement and maintain security measures to protect Linux systems from vulnerabilities and unauthorized access

• Conduct regular security audits and implement best practices for system hardening

• Ensure compliance with organizational and industry-specific security standards

• Collaborate with Security team for critical Incidents and remediation on infrastructure events

Troubleshooting and Support:

• Provide advanced-level support for Linux-related issues

• Investigate and resolve complex system and application-related problems

• Collaborate with support teams to ensure timely incident resolution

• Provide technical direction for Operation and Client Support teams on server configurations, software deployments, and other administrative tasks related to the staging and maintenance of applications

• Work with developers and other stakeholders reviewing deployed solutions and provide optimization recommendations for performance, scalability, and reliability

Automation and Scripting:

• Develop and maintain scripts (Bash, Python, etc.) to automate routine system administration tasks, improving efficiency and reducing manual errors

• Implement and manage configuration management tools to streamline administrative tasks

Infrastructure as Code (IaC):

• Design, develop, and maintain Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform and Ansible

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to automate deployment processes and ensure consistent, repeatable infrastructure provisioning

• Knowledge of GitHub as a repository for version control.

• Experience with maintaining IaC templates as base image libraries a plus.

Backup and Recovery:

• Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans and procedures to ensure business continuity in the event of an outage or disaster, as well as participate in annual DR testing

• Regularly test and validate backup and recovery procedures

Documentation:

• Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for system configurations, processes, and procedures

• Adhere to Empyrean IT Service Management processes (Incident Management, Change Management, etc.)

Must Have:

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Strong knowledge of Linux distributions, preferably CentOS, Ubuntu, and Red Hat

• Experience with virtual machine creation, configuration, migration and support, upgrades

• Experience with virtualization technologies, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud platforms

• Strong familiarity with industry standard Linux OS hardening techniques, including PAM via Active Directory integration

• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or Perl

• Experience with configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef)

• Experience supporting MySQL and PostgreSQL installations in Ubuntu/Unix is a plus

• Ability to troubleshoot operational performance issues related to servers and storage

• Experience with monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, Zabbix, and Datadog

• Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously

• Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to changes in workload demands to support the business

• Demonstrated ability to stay focused on projects from inception to completion

• Ability to effectively prioritize workload based on urgency levels and short timeline

• Ability to communicate system related issues and resolutions properly and effectively

• Ability to work and collaborate with remote vendors and smart hands to assist in troubleshooting

• Ability to work well independently and collectively in a collaborative environment

• Ability to recognize when to escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate channels

• Demonstrated experience and ability to engage senior engineering team for problem resolution

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• Relevant certifications such as RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) or LPIC (Linux Professional Institute Certification) preferred

• bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology or combination of associate degree and equivalent years of experience (or related area) preferred

• Minimum 8+ years of previous job experience in server design, build, implementation, and support
